Microchipping

On behalf of Monmouthshire County Council we are pleased to announce our dog micro chipping service.

If you have ever lost your dog, you will know how worrying and distressing this can be for the whole family. Unfortunately it is a sad fact of life that thousands of dogs go missing every year. Recent figures show that less than half of them are reunited with their owners. This is simply because they cannot be identified.

Your dog may never go out unaccompanied but all to frequently accidents happen and your dog is lost.

Save yourself the worry and get your dog micro chipped.

Why Should I Microchip my Dog?

Micro chipping is recognised internationally as the most effective way of permanently identifying your dog. Collars and discs may fall off or be removed but a microchip is in place for life.

What is a Microchip?

The microchip is a little larger than a grain of rice. It is encased in the same substance used to coat human pacemakers to help prevent rejection. The microchip is inserted into the loose skin on the back of the dog's neck in a similar way to vaccination. It causes the dog no discomfort and is a quick and easy process.

How Does it Work?

Each microchip carries your dog's unique number. This number is entered into a national database along with your dog's details and your name, address and contact numbers.

When an electronic scanner is passed over the microchip the low frequency radio waves pick up your dog's number and display it on the scanner.

It is then simply a matter of contacting the database and asking for your details. Scanners are used by the majority of agencies associated with lost and found dog's including veterinary practices, Animal Welfare agencies and Dog Warden services.

Microchipping is free via the "Chip My Dog Scheme" with Dogs Trust.
